"Her Friends Have Wings"
She waits
for the hummingbird each morning. Sooner or later, it flutters into view to
feast on her flowers. To her, it is a trusted friend stopping by for a snack.
Her friends
are everywhere she looks! They are floating on the pond, gliding on currents
overhead, and stalking bugs caught behind the screen. Some friends can only be
seen with her inner eyes—ancestors who tended fires long ago and spirits who
never took human form.
Who are we
to judge? Friends can be feathered or furry, human or angelic. I think of St.
Francis, other saints and bodhisattvas, who communed with animals and called
them “friend”.
Let’s agree
to call a friend a friend—no matter what their form.
