“She Gets to
Choose” The messenger in this painting wants me to talk about choice. She asks me to share a
story about my live-in relative, who struggles with opportunities slipping
away. She’s no longer able to live alone, fix her own meals, drive or work. She
mourns the loss. Every breath is a struggle as she fights her fate. What can be
done? Roll over and die? Give up the will to live?
In
meditation, I bathe her in healing light. I see her choices when she does not.
I see them big and small:
to breathe or not to breathe?
to shower or not?
to take medication or refuse?
to see the beauty of the day or focus on what’s missing?
I understand. I really do. The losses mount up until she feels
buried alive. Losses are like ghosts—alive only when we focus on them.
I hold her in light and love. I see her grief that comes out
in flashes of profanity and tears. I feel it. Yet, I hold onto the truth of
what I know—you get to choose how you feel minute by minute, hour by hour. Your
life counts even when you can’t see it.

OH MY GOSH this is so splendidly said. I 'invite' you to put it on a care-givers website, to offer it as truth when other feelings crowd this same circumstance in another household. And look at those eyes - wide open and clear and reflecting.
