“The Blessing of Hilma af Klint”
Those who came before us leave, if they are
fortunate, painted canvas, words on paper, film, and digital records of their
creative spirit. As we think about the blessings they left us, our days are
enriched long after they shed their physical bodies.
Hilma af Klint is
an ancestor who blesses me every time I look at her photograph. She listened to
her inner-most self and whisperings of the cosmos. When she was prompted to
make huge paintings of geometric shapes and lines, the type that had never been
seen before, she complied. Executors were told to keep the notebooks and
paintings secluded for at least 20 years following her death. The public
actually had over 40 years to catch up with Hilma’s vision at her first
exhibition. Through her paintings and notebooks, Hilma is alive, vibrant and
relevant.
Here is my
blessing for you:
May your life be
rich with inspiration. May your creative expression far outlive your walk on
the earth that one day you, too, may peer out from a photograph and bring the
viewer to tears of appreciation.
