A Blessing for Risk-Takers

"She Is a Risk-Taker"

This Messenger of Love comes with a blessing for all risk-takers:
May all your risks bear fruit that is sweet to the tongue. May your excitement outweigh your fears. With faith, may every risk you take lead you closer to the path only you are here to walk.

New Yupo Painting

"She Is Bigger Than Her Fears"

#PCJ30in30 This Messenger sees fear as an invitation to love. When fear arises, she bathes it in love. She acknowledges its arrival like a neighbor’s child lost in the dark looking for love and comfort.

She speaks in the mirror with loving words, writes love letters to her fears, and imagines giving them a hug. She holds her fears in love and sends them off to their rightful home as she would a neighbor’s child that is not her own to claim and nurture.

They are just passing by, looking for love, which she gives freely.

How I Do It

The Tools I Use:
1.      Rubber brayer- to apply paint
2.      Spatula- to transfer paint from jar to substrate
3.      Original stencils- cut on Cricut machine from original drawings
4.      Acrylic paint- I use Golden and Nova paint
5.      Clear gesso- to increase “tooth” on substrate and layer between paint
6.      Gelli plate- to create monoprints for applying paint to substrate
7.      Deli paper- for creation of monoprints
8.      Krylon Fine Art Fixative- 3-5 coats on pastel; 15 minutes between each coat

I start by laying hands on substrate surface. I bless the material and align with its potential. Then I randomly pick acrylic paint in a family of colors. My process in brief:

1.      Apply a coat of gesso
2.      Use stencil(s) to create background pattern
3.      Apply washes, scrape, scratch, and rub layers of translucent color
4.      Occasionally apply wet monoprint for additional texture
5.      Allow layers to dry to avoid “mud”
6.      Find reference photo to ensure my proportions are correct
7.      Create portrait—lay in shadows with pan pastels; finish with pastel and carbon pencils
8.      Complete portrait with fixative

New Portrait

“She Sees Life from a Different Angle” She doesn’t try to be odd. She just sees things differently than most—tears are cleansing; fear is transformative; death is celebratory; diversity is divine…

It puts her at odds with much of humanity. At odds, but not odd. She just sees life from a different perspective. To her, life is a wonder from every angle.

"She Gets to Choose"

“She Gets to Choose” The messenger in this painting wants me to talk about choice. She asks me to share a story about my live-in relative, who struggles with opportunities slipping away. She’s no longer able to live alone, fix her own meals, drive or work. She mourns the loss. Every breath is a struggle as she fights her fate. What can be done? Roll over and die? Give up the will to live?

In meditation, I bathe her in healing light. I see her choices when she does not. I see them big and small:
to breathe or not to breathe?
to shower or not?
to take medication or refuse?
to see the beauty of the day or focus on what’s missing?
I understand. I really do. The losses mount up until she feels buried alive. Losses are like ghosts—alive only when we focus on them.
I hold her in light and love. I see her grief that comes out in flashes of profanity and tears. I feel it. Yet, I hold onto the truth of what I know—you get to choose how you feel minute by minute, hour by hour. Your life counts even when you can’t see it.

"Her Light Makes Flowers Bloom"

“Her Light Makes Flowers Bloom” Her bright face is like the sun energizing all living things. She wants to speak to girls and young women:

Daughters, you are precious in every shade and shape. Your beauty is not gauged by a tape measure, scale or yardstick. Your beauty is eternal. It shines from your eyes and every move you make. See the flowers as your sisters. Their beauty is yours!

New Collage Painting

“Her Name Is English Rose” She blooms in every season under a sky bringing rain or sun. She takes her cue from the roses growing in her garden that she may grow to be fragrant, soft, and durable.

There is no criticism or comparison in her garden; just gratitude. She fingers one petal after another like a blind girl seeing for the first time.

***
She reminds me of my grandmother, whose father emigrated from London to become the first commercial rose-grower in California (or so I have been told). As a young adult, my grandmother loaded her father’s winter roses onto a horse-drawn wagon. Before dawn, she trekked from Eagle Rock to the Los Angeles flower mart to sell their beauties. She talked about the experience all her life.
