The Fire Maiden

“The Fire Maiden” I started to fashion her in my usual way—with a light, delicate touch. She would have none of it! Maybe it’s the wildfires raging nearby or the 747 Supertanker flying overhead dropping fire retardant on a nearby hillside. Whatever the reason, she is full of fire and won’t be contained. No soft pastel pencil for her! She wanted to be depicted in bold strokes of color with no blending or subtlety.

She’s a fire maiden—full of passion and ready to forge her way whatever direction she desires and ready to clear whatever stands in her way.

New Mixed-Media Painting

“She Delights in the Shape of Her Soul” This Messenger of Love paid me a visit without me realizing how she resembles the pioneer novelist, #VirginiaWolff. While she appreciates her physical form, she is most delighted by the shape of her soul. It is so vast that it dwarfs her physical body. Her soul is, in truth, a shape-shifter. When it meets a tree towering on the hill, it takes on the shape of that tree in a greeting that dissolves all separation. It does the same whether she encounters a moth, a mouse, or the moon. Whatever shape it takes, her soul finds kinship with all that is seen and unseen in the world.

She reminds me of my relative, who is now in hospice care. She looks at me with eyes that shine as I have never before seen. Is her ego losing its hold? Is she letting go of struggle? It’s a beautiful thing to see. Her transition might be a month, a year, or a day. It’s up to her to decide when she is ready to set her body aflame with the light of a luminous star.

Homage to Hilma

“The Blessing of Hilma af Klint”

Those who came before us leave, if they are fortunate, painted canvas, words on paper, film, and digital records of their creative spirit. As we think about the blessings they left us, our days are enriched long after they shed their physical bodies.

Hilma af Klint is an ancestor who blesses me every time I look at her photograph. She listened to her inner-most self and whisperings of the cosmos. When she was prompted to make huge paintings of geometric shapes and lines, the type that had never been seen before, she complied. Executors were told to keep the notebooks and paintings secluded for at least 20 years following her death. The public actually had over 40 years to catch up with Hilma’s vision at her first exhibition. Through her paintings and notebooks, Hilma is alive, vibrant and relevant.

Here is my blessing for you:

May your life be rich with inspiration. May your creative expression far outlive your walk on the earth that one day you, too, may peer out from a photograph and bring the viewer to tears of appreciation.

"She Is Bigger Than Her Fears"

#PCJ30in30 This Messenger sees fear as an invitation to love. When fear arises, she bathes it in love. She acknowledges its arrival like a neighbor’s child lost in the dark looking for love and comfort.

She speaks in the mirror with loving words, writes love letters to her fears, and imagines giving them a hug. She holds her fears in love and sends them off to their rightful home as she would a neighbor’s child that is not her own to claim and nurture.

They are just passing by, looking for love, which she gives freely.
